Use an Obsidian Vault as a Persistent Memory for Hermes

Community members wire Hermes into an Obsidian vault as a persistent knowledge base, letting the agent read existing notes to answer questions with the user's prior research.

Requirements

  • Use the Obsidian skill to read, search, and create notes in the vault.
  • File tools are required.
  • Zotero or another reference manager is optional for literature intake.
  • Cron is optional for daily automation.

How to use

One documented setup syncs Zotero and Obsidian from a PC to Obsidian and Hermes on a Raspberry Pi 5, where Hermes reads only the synced vault.

Use a consistent folder and tag structure; a flat collection of notes does not provide the same knowledge organization.

Syncthing, Dropbox, or iCloud can keep the vault available across devices, but simultaneous writes by Hermes and Obsidian can create file-lock edge cases.

  1. Point Hermes to the Obsidian vault using the Obsidian skill or direct file tools.
  2. Make the vault reachable from Hermes through a local path, synced folder, or mounted path.
  3. Grant read and write permissions appropriate to the intended workflow.
# In Hermes config or .env
OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH=/path/to/your/vault

Optionally configure one of the source's common cron patterns.

/cron add "0 7 * * *" "Read yesterday's journal, today's calendar, and open tasks, then write a morning briefing to vault/00-Daily/Today.md"

Use the supplied prompts for vault workflows.

Use the daily-review prompt to summarize recent notes and create a dated review note.

Read my vault, identify what I worked on yesterday, what meetings I have today, and write a morning briefing in vault/00-Daily/Today.md.

Use the research-capture prompt to save a source summary with tags and links.

I just finished reading this paper: [paste abstract]. Save a summary to vault/10-Research/ with key findings, open questions, and tags matching my existing taxonomy.

Use the knowledge-retrieval prompt to answer from vault notes and cite the note names used.

What do my notes say about MLX quantization? Cite the specific notes.
