Hermes Kanban: Multi-Agent Swarm from Slack

Hermes Kanban lets you dispatch complex tasks to a durable multi-agent swarm — specialist sub-agents working in parallel with a verifier and synthesizer — straight from a chat message in Slack or another gateway.

Requirements

Hermes Agent v0.15 or later.
A messaging gateway; Slack is the focus here, but Telegram, Discord, and others work the same.
A model provider that can run multiple agents in parallel — OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic direct, or a mix.
Optional: a Hermes dashboard for mid-flight inspection.

How to use

Hermes has delegate_task for sub-agents, but that is a function call inside the running agent's session: it does not persist, does not checkpoint, and does not survive a restart.

The pattern scales: more workers means more parallelism, but verification of the synthesizer's output gets noisier. Three to four workers is the sweet spot in community examples.

Kanban is durable, delegate_task is not: use Kanban for jobs that take longer than a chat session, and delegate_task for quick parallel calls inside a single conversation.

The board is ~/.hermes/kanban.db — back it up. A daily cron to copy it to your backup volume is the same pattern as hermes-on-flyio.md's volume snapshot.

Install Hermes v0.15 or later:

Configure Slack (or any other gateway) and pair the bot to your #agent-tasks channel:

   hermes gateway setup
   hermes gateway install

Enable Kanban in your Hermes config. It is part of the v0.15 release; check the docs for the current default.
From Slack, send the first swarm:

   /kanban swarm "Audit this repo for hardcoded credentials, exposed
   secrets, and unsafe shell expansions. Workers: scanner, historian,
   reporter. Verifier: senior-reviewer. Synthesizer: writer."
